“Kindness in words creates confidence. Kindness in thinking creates
profoundness. Kindness in giving creates love.”

Lao Tzu

The role of schools has changed. There is a philosophical argument related to change. The concept and practice of charity has changed.

Society has changed.

Change is not a statement nor a noun. It is a verb. Changing attitudes and beliefs, the norms of social behaviour. It is easy to fall into memories tainted by rose coloured glasses. This is not to say that one generation has faced greater challenges than other generations. That would be like comparing cats and dogs, light and dark and shades of grey.

The current debate around the impact of social media seems to be hijacking the epidemic of male violence. Yes, the content that drives social media is persuasive and markets every thing from perfume to new recipes. The content that is created to harm, humiliate, harass or marginalise a person is shared in vicious circles of maladaptive behaviours.

Changing societal attitudes requires more than politicians spraying words around.

The International Day of Charity recognises and celebrates the role of charities in our society, during times of crisis and everyday life. The United Nations page can be found here:

It is not too hard to google and find teaching resources. Your school or workplace, perhaps community group could:

– Set up a charity event

– Volunteer

– Donate items or funds to a charity.

Charity supports communities, strengthening social cohesion.

Parents and Citizens Association (P and C) have always played a significant role in schools. Sausage sizzles, organising raffles and fundraising are some of the ways that the P and C support our schools. Importantly, the P and C is a key stakeholder in education.

When was the last time that you thanked the parents and citizens, cooking in the smoke and steam of a barbeque on full burn with sausages and onions? Perhaps the parents running the canteen at sporting events?

Volunteering your time can bring you more joy, and lessons in life beyond the walls of the classroom.
